Downtown, Swain Fifth Grade Meets with Author

September 30, 2022

Fifth-grade students at the Downtown and Swain Campuses came together via a video call to talk with a real author, Rob Buyea.

Rob Buyea is a children's author who is best known for his series of Mr. Terupt books. His book from last year, What Comes Next, is about a girl learning how to get through life's challenges while adopting a dog from the shelter.

Fifth-graders at both Downtown Campus and Swain Campus are hard at work writing their own personal narratives.  They paid special attention when Rob Buyea talked about his writing process. As things happen in his life he will stop and write those things down so he can use those things in his books. He once had a student make a mess with the water fountain and he took that story and put it into one of his books. His daughters really love doing gymnastics, so one of the characters in his books loves to do gymnastics. Rob Buyea finds inspiration all around him from his life!

unnamed 3Mr. Buyea shared that he spends most of his time revising his writing and making it better. He encouraged the fifth graders to keep revising their writing to make it the best it can be.  Fifth graders then asked Rob Buyea some questions at the end of his talk. Questions included, “How long does it take you to write a book?”  “What will your next book be called?” “What’s your favorite book that you wrote?”  “Will you write any more Mr. Terupt books?”

Fifth graders from both campuses will be getting together in the future to share their personal narratives with each other.
