SIP Kindergarten Learns About Diwali
On Thursday, October 31, Mrs. Nemisha Patel, mother of Maya Patel '32, came into speak to my Spanish Immersion Kindergarten class about the significance of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights.
Through her presentation, Mrs. Patel talked about how Diwali is a time for Hindus to visit the temple and pray for the wellbeing of their family and friends, and for peace for all living beings in this world. She highlighted Diwali traditions, including lighting candles, exchanging gifts, eating sweets, participating in traditional dancing, lighting firecrackers in the streets, and wearing new clothing.
After her presentation, Mrs. Patel led the students in creating a special craft called a Rangoli, which is thought to bring good fortune and prosperity. Traditional Rangolis are made of colored powder, dry grains and/or flowers, and adorn the doorsteps to welcome guests with honor. The class had a lot of fun decorating their own Rangolis with bright paper and sparkling gems.
Thank you, Mrs. Patel, for sharing your traditions with our class!
