Swain Campus Celebrates Latine/Hispanic Heritage Month with Food, Art, and Community
Swain Campus recently celebrated the culmination of Latine/Hispanic Heritage Month with a delightful combination of delicious cuisine and two captivating town meetings.
These events were organized and led by a dedicated team of parents: Ingrid Álvarez Russell (mother of Celeste, 3rd grade, and Nyomi, 7th grade), Edith Gutierrez-Hawbaker (mother of Levi, 6th grade), Clayvi Brown (mother of Ethan, 4th grade, and DJ, 7th grade), Jasmine Salgado (mother of Leila, 2nd grade), and Tania Brannon (mother of Jayce, 1st grade).
At the Beginning School, Ingrid Álvarez Russell shared an enlightening presentation about Latine/Hispanic Heritage Month. She shared a beautiful slideshow, which featured cherished family photographs from the Dominican Republic, as well as an exploration of the book "If Dominican Were a Color." Her presentation was packed with intriguing insights into the culture and history of the Dominican Republic, concluding with an engaging sampling of vibrant music and dance.
During a combined Lower and Middle School town meeting, Edith Gutierrez-Hawbaker introduced our students to the talented members of Malta's Con Leche art group. This session provided students with an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of their artistic process and identity. They also had the privilege of viewing a selection of the family's remarkable art pieces and even had the chance to create their own unique stickers!
Additionally, this same group of Swain Campus families generously treated students, faculty, and staff to culinary delights that showcased the flavors of Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to these exceptional community members for graciously sharing their rich and beautiful heritage with us.
