Hour of Code Celebrated at Upper School
On Friday December 13th, the Upper School Community participated in the International "Hour of Code" event in celebration of Computer Science Education Week.
We began our "hour" with a talk from Moravian Academy parent Mr. Jeremy Hylton, Engineering Director at Google Inc., who shared with students information about computer science and the wide array of job opportunities associated with the field. In advisories, students were then given the opportunity to try out coding through various activities ranging from beginner to more comfortable on hourofcode.com.
The Hour of Code started as a one hour-introduction to computer science designed to demystify “code”, to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts.
Here at Moravian Academy, we offer several courses that provide students the opportunity to explore coding, including Programming 1, Programming 2, AP Computer Science Principles, and Engineering & Robotics, in addition to First Robotics Competition Team and the various coding competitions that we attend.
