Winter 2021 Athletic Update
We wanted to provide some additional information as a follow up to Governor Wolf’s announcement regarding the new COVID-19 mitigation measures and the suspension of extra and co-curricular activities starting Saturday, December 12th, 2020 through Monday, January 4th, 2021. As a result of the new measures, all winter athletic practices and competitions at the Middle and Upper School have been placed on hold. Upper School practices will resume Monday, January 4th.
We also wanted to give you an update on what had been decided prior to yesterday’s new conference. At a Colonial League meeting this past Tuesday, Principals and Athletic Directors approved the following:
- Colonial League contests will start January 11th or later. (7-6 vote). Moravian Academy had already postponed our contests until January 15th.
- Basketball will go from 12 league games to 10 or 11 league games.
- No spectators for winter contests unless it is for senior night parents, milestone events(1000 pts or 100 wins). This can be revisited if restrictions are lifted. Colonial League schools will be streaming all games and make the links available to all.
- Basketball will move to an 8 team playoff tournament. All League Schools are placed in one division with one divisional winner and 7 other playoff teams determined by winning percentage in league games.
- Colonial League playoff requirements to qualify: Basketball must play a minimum of 5 league games. For District playoff consideration, teams need to have 8 contests scheduled at the beginning of the season and play a minimum of 6 games. There is a waiver process in case of COVID-19 issues that would prevent schools from playing the minimum number of games.
The Colonial League Athletic Directors are scheduled to meet this coming Tuesday to further discuss our response to the latest news. As we have communicated, our goal is to be to provide opportunities for our student-athletes to practice and compete while continuing to follow the health and safety guidance. As decisions are made by the PIAA, District XI and our Reopening Task Force we will be sure to share this information with our community. You can expect an update before our return to school on January 4th.
