AP Chemistry Investigates the Iodine-Clock Reaction

January 05, 2023

Students in AP Chemistry investigated the iodine-clock reaction as part of their kinetics unit.

The iodine-clock reaction occurs through a series of steps involving the formation of iodine and its capture by starch to create the sudden appearance of a dark blue color after a certain period of time. Students were tasked with timing this reaction under varying concentration, temperature, and catalytic conditions. As part of their analysis, students will derive how the rate of the reaction is controlled through collision theory and impacted by the various factors tested in the lab. Enjoy the pictures and videos of the students and the reaction in action!
