Athletics Update: January 7, 2024

January 07, 2024

Our winter athletic season is well under way with competitions having started in early December for our Merle-Smith and Historic Downtown Campus teams. Our overall participation numbers across the three campuses are strong. We currently have about 140 athletes participating in winter sports.

Our Varsity Boys' and Girls' Basketball teams opened up the season by competing in our John Donmoyer Memorial Basketball Classic hosted in the Athletic and Wellness Center. This event is also coupled with our Athletic Hall of Fame luncheon and induction, which is always a great way for former athletes and families to reconnect.

Boys' and Girls' Swimming: With four meets under their belts, the boys’ team has gotten off the blocks quickly with a perfect 4-0 record. The girls’ team is also off to a good start with a 1-3 record, but with a couple of their losses coming only by a few points. With thirty-five athletes on our team, it is evident that this program is important to our school’s winter athletic opportunities. We are grateful for the partnership with the Wilson Area School District and having access to their swimming venue. The team continues to train in preparation for a busy January.

Girls’ Basketball: Our Varsity Girls’ Basketball team start have been hampered by a few injuries, but at full strength they have demonstrated to be a strong opponent especially on the defensive side of the ball. Ninth-grade point guard, Luna Lopez '27, returned to the line-up against Wilson to lead the team in scoring with five three pointers. Their record currently stands at 2-5 as they head into break.

Boys’ Basketball: With a 3-4 record, the Varsity Boys’ Basketball team has demonstrated that they can compete with some of our strongest league opponents. With a mixture of experienced players and newcomers to the Varsity level, the team will look for some consistency in performances to secure some wins in league play. With two middle school teams, a junior high program, a junior varsity and a varsity team, there is plenty of enthusiasm for the sport of basketball this winter.
