Exploring Ceramics with Visiting Artist Deborah Slahta

January 07, 2024

Last week, Moravian Academy's Swain Campus hosted ceramic artist and teacher Deborah Slahta from the Banana Factory in Bethlehem. During art class, Deb shared her passion for art with Kindergarten to 8th-grade students.

IMG_2309-1Deborah's visit went beyond traditional art sessions; it was an immersive experience, featuring engaging wheel-throwing demonstrations and guided ceramic projects. Several students even had the opportunity to experience the challenge of centering clay on a ceramic wheel—an accomplishment that proves more difficult than it appears.

She integrated mathematical and scientific concepts into these projects to enhance students' understanding and develop interdisciplinary connections. For example, 6th graders learned about measuring and geometryIMG_7611 (1) through origami box construction, while 2nd graders connected animal habitats to art by crafting taco fish. 3rd graders explored circular forms while making molded bowls.

We extend our gratitude to Deborah Slahta for sharing her expertise and passion, enhancing skills, and fostering appreciation for interdisciplinary connections at Moravian Academy.
