Celebrating Three Kings Day in Spanish Immersion

January 06, 2020

This week, our Spanish Immersion kindergarten students visited the Basilio Huertas Senior Center for Epiphany, also known in Spanish as "El Día de los Reyes" or Three Kings Day.

For many Christians, especially in Central and South America, the holiday season continues through the 12th day of Christmas, when it is believed in their faith that baby Jesus was visited by the Three Kings, also known as the Three Wise Men or Magi. Following a star across the desert for 12 days to ancient Bethlehem, the Three Kings —Gaspar, Melchior and Balthazar— traveled by horse, camel and elephant to present Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

The seniors sang songs to the students and Sra. Torres read about the story of the magi. The seniors shared their culture and traditions with the children with love and enthusiasm. Our students sang Spanish carols and took photos with the three kings to commemorate the celebration.

Upon returning to school, Spanish teacher Srta. Barbara Medina came to visit the class to tell students more about how Three Kings Day is celebrated in Puerto Rico.
